Botanicals

The term "botanicals" refers to various herbal preparations such as extracts from plants, secondary plant substances like polyphenols and carotenoids or other herbal preparations. Unlike medicinal products, food supplements do not have to be tested and approved under current European food law before they are placed on the market. An exception are the so-called novel foods and foods made from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which are subject to an authorisation procedure and thus to a health risk assessment by the authorities.
